When Should You Start Mowing in Oklahoma? A Month-by-Month Guide

The short answer: wait for green-up

Around Ponca City, bermuda grass — what most of us have — stays dormant and tan until soil temperatures hold above 60°F. That usually means mid-April, some years closer to May. Mowing a dormant lawn doesn't hurt it much, but there's nothing to cut, and scalping it too early just invites weeds into the bare spots.

A good first move in March isn't mowing at all: it's a cleanup. Get the leaves, sticks, and winter debris off the turf so sunlight can reach the crowns and wake the lawn up evenly.

April–May: the ramp-up

Once your lawn is about 50% green, make the first cut slightly lower than your summer height — around 1.5 inches for bermuda. This clears out dead top-growth and lets the sun hit new shoots. After that, raise the deck to 2–2.5 inches and settle into a rhythm.

In May, bermuda hits its stride and weekly mowing starts to matter. The golden rule is the one-third rule: never remove more than a third of the blade in a single cut. If it got away from you, take it down in two passes a few days apart instead of scalping it once.

June–August: peak season

During a real heat wave with no rain, growth slows. It's fine to stretch to 10 days, and it's smart to raise the cut a half inch — taller grass shades the soil and holds moisture.

September–November: the wind-down

Growth tapers through September and October. You'll drift from weekly to bi-weekly without trying. Keep mowing until the first hard freeze knocks the lawn fully dormant — usually early-to-mid November here.

Make the last cut of the year a touch shorter. Long, floppy grass under winter leaf cover is the perfect setup for snow mold and voles.
