The North Central Oklahoma Spring Cleanup Checklist

Do these in order
1. Clear leaves and winter debris — matted leaves smother turf and hide the bare spots you need to see. 2. Cut back last year's dead perennials and ornamental grasses before new growth tangles in. 3. Re-edge the beds — a crisp edge is 80% of curb appeal. 4. Scalp-and-bag the dormant lawn (see our mowing-height guide). 5. Pre-emergent before soil hits 55°F. 6. Refresh mulch to a 2–3 inch depth, keeping it off trunks. 7. Fix low spots with a soil-and-seed patch or sod plug. 8. Service the mower — or hire the route and skip steps 4 through 8 entirely.
Mistake one: mulch volcanoes
Piling mulch against tree trunks holds moisture on bark, invites borers, and slowly kills the tree you're trying to dress up. Mulch should look like a donut, never a volcano.
Mistake two: working wet soil
One warm March weekend after rain and everyone's out raking soggy turf. Foot traffic and rake tines on saturated soil compact it and rip live crowns out with the thatch. If the ground squishes, give it three dry days first.
