Bermuda, Zoysia, or Fescue? Picking the Right Grass for an Oklahoma Lawn

Start with sunlight, not preference
Grass choice in Oklahoma is 90% a sunlight decision. OSU Extension's 'Selecting a Lawn Grass for Oklahoma' fact sheet puts it plainly: bermudagrass is the best-adapted turf for full-sun Oklahoma yards thanks to its heat and drought tolerance, while shaded sites need a cool-season grass like tall fescue because warm-season grasses simply can't tolerate shade.
Bermuda: the default for a reason
It spreads aggressively, repairs itself, handles 105°F weeks, stripes beautifully, and goes gold-dormant in winter. Fun local fact: OSU's turfgrass breeding program has released some of the country's best bermuda cultivars — Latitude 36 and NorthBridge among them — bred in Stillwater for exactly our transition-zone winters (OSU Turfgrass Science). If your yard gets 8+ hours of sun, bermuda is hard to argue with.
Zoysia: the premium middle ground
Zoysia tolerates light shade that would thin bermuda out, feels denser underfoot, and needs less mowing. The trade-offs are cost (usually sodded, rarely seeded well), slow spread — damage takes a season to heal, not weeks — and the same winter dormancy as bermuda.
Tall fescue: for the shade you can't change
North side of the house, under mature oaks — that's fescue territory. It stays green in winter, which is lovely, but it suffers in Oklahoma summers: expect to water it more, mow it taller (3+ inches), and overseed thin spots every fall. It's a maintenance commitment, not a set-and-forget lawn. It's also fall armyworms' favorite food, so scout it in late summer.
Mixed-sun yards
Most real yards are a mix, and the honest answer is two grasses: bermuda where the sun hits, fescue in the shade pockets, with a clean mowed edge between them.
